Applied Machine Learning Engineer
Deep Voice – Machine Learning for Marine Mammal Conservation
At Deep Voice, we apply cutting-edge machine learning to support the protection of marine mammals through bioacoustics. Our mission is to empower biologists and conservationists with robust tools for detecting, classifying, and understanding underwater acoustic data.
We’re hiring a full-time Applied Machine Learning Engineer to help us build and deploy machine learning models that analyze real-world ocean soundscapes. You’ll work at the intersection of AI, ecology, and bioacoustics — turning complex acoustic data into insights that help safeguard vulnerable species and ecosystems.
This is a mostly remote position, with one in-person day per week at our office (Tel Aviv area).
About the Role
This is an end-to-end applied ML position, spanning research, development, and deployment. You’ll be collaborating with a small interdisciplinary team to design models that can handle the challenges of real-world, underwater acoustic data — often noisy, highly variable, and species-rich.
One of our current flagship projects is focused on the North Atlantic Right Whale, a critically endangered species where vessel strikes are a major threat. Our goal is to support early detection and vessel avoidance using machine learning models that distinguish Right Whale calls from similar species such as Humpbacks.
Your main responsibilities:
- Develop deep learning models (primarily in PyTorch) for the detection and classification of marine mammal vocalizations.
- Build robust training pipelines and evaluation frameworks.
- Implement and optimize serving infrastructure for real-time or near-real-time inference, empowering clients to operate and manage models independently.
- Collaborate with our clients (researchers, regulators, etc) to understand their needs and supply appropriate solutions.
- Collaborate and develop core capabilities with the volunteers in the research team.
What We’re Looking For
Required:
- Ability to work independently and deliver end-to-end solutions
Strong experience (at least 3 years) developing deep learning models (e.g., CNNs, Transformers, self-supervised learning, etc.) - Fluency in Python and deep learning frameworks, especially PyTorch (at least 3 years of experience)
- Strong communication and documentation skills
Preferred:
- Background in audio, bioacoustics, or signal processing
- Familiarity with model and environment deployment tools (e.g., ONNX, TorchServe, Docker)
- Experience with real-world, noisy, or low-SNR data
- Passion for wildlife conservation or environmental tech
🌍 Why Work With Us?
This is a rare opportunity to apply your machine learning skills to real-world environmental impact. You’ll be part of a mission-driven organization that combines tech and science to address urgent challenges in ocean conservation.
- Full-time, mostly remote (1 day/week in-office)
- Grant-funded and fully budgeted position
- Collaborative, purpose-driven team
- Direct impact on marine conservation efforts
